pre-fall 2010 trends: pt III

minimalism is probably my favourite trend. it is simple, streamlined and it isn't fussy or embellished. designers like alexander wang and stella mccartney embrace this trend and work it to reflect their style well.

dirty deeds

photo: leigh farrell

this is an editorial i made for my topics and issues in design class. this is how i interpreted the words "play with colour."

NPF 558 - Issues in Design
Project #1 - Play With Colour

"Dirty Deeds" by Leigh Farrell

By taking the words "play" and "colour," and applying them to my favourite hobby (fashion photography), I have come up with an eerie, yet humorous editorial spread.

I looked at the idea of "play" as role-play, which is often thought of in a sexual way. I steered away from the sexual connotations and was looking for ways to juxtapose roles in a thought-provoking way. Through this train of thought came the concept of switching stereotypical roles in society, such as the role of a husband and wife. Women have typically taken on the role of homemaker throughout the years; cooking and cleaning being two primary duties for the housewife.

After sifting through these thoughts, I decided on photographing a man cooking pancakes in the kitchen - a task that one would normally imagine a woman doing.

My personal photography style lacks a lot of colour for the most part, so I toyed with colour in a selective way. I enhanced the primary colours red, yellow and blue in each image, which happen to be the focus of the images, as well. In the spreads, you will find the pancake, syrup, margarine, flour, broom and dustpan stand out from the rest of the images.

Overall, the editorial is arranged to tell a story and bring the viewer full circle, beginning with a pancake, showing the process of it being created and ending with it being eaten.

pre-fall 2010 trends: pt II

how appropriate; i just finished writing a history of costume essay and now i'm making a post about toga-inspired dress.

draping is an easy way to add interest to a solid coloured garment without having to add any sort of graphic detail or ornamentation and without being overly distracting. it adds a feminine touch to a basic garment and can hide or accentuate parts of the body. designers are all over this trend for fall!

so, when you're out looking for a new LBD for the fall (jonathan, that one's for you), i suggest looking for a dress with draping detailing. or just throw a toga party. not.

pre-fall 2010 trends: pt I

the belted waistline can be seen everywhere in designers' pre-fall 2010 collections. this trend is nothing new, but what i find interesting about it this time around is that it's being seen over jackets, vests, and simple t-shirts. this trend overlaps with others that i've noticed, such as military and 1940s inspired dress. i'm not a huge fan, personally, of throwing on a belt in an impractical way, but this might change this fall.

ps: i know it's not even spring yet, but i just love fall fashions. so deal!

weapons of choice

1 - thierry mugler rouge unique in fantasy
2 - make up for ever laquered lipstick in #203 orange fluo pink
3 - MAC matte lipstick in russian red

i get many complements on my lipstick, so i shall reveal once and for all my secret weapons...

thierry mugler's fantasy shade is amazing. it looks blue at first, but when you put it on, it changes to a sheer purple, then to a magenta! next, you can't go wrong with make up for ever... their pigments are so bright and this shade of pink lasts all day long. lastly, MAC is tried, tested and true. russian red is my life... plus, the matte finish means no lip liner and no feathering!
