THOMAS// SS2011
It's that time of year again that all of us Torontonians have been anticipating... LG Fashion Week! (Note the hint of sarcasm in my voice.)
To be fair, this season deserves much more recognition than past seasons. This is thanks to the newly established "The Fashion Collective," comprised of my friends Kate Mullin, Dwayne Kennedy and Brian A. Richards. The Fashion Collective provides a fresh take on the seemingly lacking Toronto fashion industry by supporting the talented up and comers that would have otherwise been overlooked by the Fashion Design Council of Canada. Among these designers are my friends Drew and Mikey (Michael) Thomas whom I have mentioned in many other posts. Thanks to The Fashion Collective, THOMAS// SS2011 debuted at LG Fashion Week last night.
The THOMAS// SS2011 collection was much more refined than past collections. Having moved past the shredding trend, the designers created a far more tailored and sophisticated collection featuring long button-down tunics, draped cardigans, and leather bermuda shorts. A favourite of the show-goers were the ruched black skinny jeans, which I later found out were cut in a concave C-shape so that when worn, became scrunched around the knee. My personal favourite pieces were the black skinny jeans with a horizontal front slit just above the knee, as well as the hooded silk cape that had been made in wool last season.
Seeing my friends make it to LG Fashion Week has made me feel like a proud mother, as I'm sure many other friends of theirs feel. I look forward to seeing how they develop their line in seasons to come!

construct to deconstruct
if you didn't see the shredded tee first on style blogs like lookbook a few years back, then you surely noticed when the trend trickled up and designers like raquel allegra based her debut collection on it last spring.

the shredded tee is to the torso as ripped jeans are to the legs, only more impractical. so, what's the appeal? i went to fiona green, assistant fashion editor of FLARE magazine for her expertise.
"people are always looking for the next spin on the ultimate classic wardrobe staple: the t-shirt," green says. "[this trend's] popularity has been amplified because people are able to achieve this look as a DIY."

thomas s/s10
the growing success of a toronto-born clothing line, thomas, is thanks to the shredding technique that co-founders drew and mikey thomas based their debut fall 2009 collection on. but with shirts starting at $120, how can one justify purchasing these delicate garments at such high price-points?
"people with money would rather pay for it than [shred the shirts] themselves," says drew thomas. "it's in fashion, while still holding a designer label."
it all comes down to one question: should we be investing in this trend?
"i wouldn't recommend investing now in a shredded tee with a high price-point. it's an easy DIY if you want to participate in this look," green says.
while it's important to invest your money in versatile wardrobe staples, it's still as important to have fun with the latest trends. so take a trip to chinatown, get in on the six-for-ten t-shirt deals strewn about the spadina sidewalks, and get shredding!

show|off

"not a lot of stuff looks good."
the event showcased eight photos directed by different stylists and photographed by different photographers. the catch was the same shredded thomas tee had to be used in each photo.
some photos turned out to be more "fashion editorial", while other photographers went for the more graphic and abstract feel by taking close up photos of the shirt or only photographing the model's body.
stylists included friends hannah sider, fiona green, petra collins and richard autio, to name a few, who all created unique and inspiring images for this event.
the night was fun, the drinks were flowing, and the boutique was packed. check out more here!

ps: keep your eyes peeled for a thomas shirt to be found in an upcoming issue of zink magazine!

a little update on the event at upc boutique on thursday...

i'm pretty sure everyone there was drunk and it was hilarious, the pinot grigio was pink (?) and the hors d'oeuvres were tasty. mikey and drew's new line was the hit of the night. the owner of the store was wearing a tank by them and a stylist by the name of marek requested a shredded jumpsuit to style editorials for shoots in milan and elsewhere in europe!
my thomas shirt
their line is called thomas. their shirts are selling for $120 a piece. they are all one of a kind. they have both tanks and short sleeved tops. i am a proud owner of a thomas shredded tee and i think you all should go check their pieces out!
