crossing cultures

NPF 558 - Issues in Design
Project #2 – Crossing Cultures

By Leigh Farrell

“Crossing cultures” can mean many things, whether applied to race, geographical location, language, job, media, and the list goes on. Rather than going down the obvious path (race), I decided to explore crossing ages or generations.

I immediately thought of using an object that is associated with a child and juxtaposing it with something adult-related and came up with my “Barbie soft porn” concept, as I call it.

The concept is fairly self-explanatory; the element that makes this piece effective lays in the fact that it is risqué while still being photos of a child’s doll.

For my project, I took a Barbie and did a nude photo shoot of her using a Nikon D90 DSLR Camera and a Nikon Speedlight SB-600 to achieve desired lighting. Using a piece of blue Bristol board, I created a seamless backdrop.

I posed the doll in the most realistic ways possible, as I wanted the viewer to almost do a double take of the photo, thinking it’s a person and then discovering it’s actually a doll.

Though some may see this series of photos of a nude doll to be just that – a series of photos of a nude doll, the piece itself brings up the issue of children growing up too quickly in our fast-paced society. I wanted the photos to be eye-catching and humorous, while still holding meaning and thoughtfulness within them.

cobrasnake fashion week

it's like second nature for most of us to visit style.com to look at the latest runway shows, but from time to time it can get a bit tedious looking at model after model on a runway and clicking the "click to skip this ad" button every ten images.

today i found myself paroozing the cobrasnake website to find that mark goes to many of the big shows in new york fashion week. being an event photographer, he captures the event as a whole as opposed to just the runway looks. i see it as the photography version of the tv show RAW, except far more quirky. plus he goes to the after parties, so it's fun to see people going from being sober at the fashion show to drunk and putting dollar billz in strippers' thongs at the club...

lurk for yourself!

rodarte fall 2010

i've never been crazy for rodarte, but i can definitely appreciate good design when i see it. the mulleavy sisters never fail to impress and create unique, stand-out collections amongst other designers. i just finished watching their latest show on live.showstudio.com.
it was refreshing to see an abundance of beige, white and floral prints in a sea of dark fall 2010 collections. i'm really into the crocheted pieces and the haunting sheer fabrics used, but most of all i fell in love with the brightest piece of all in their collection (believe it or not!) - the skirt in the first look. the only other time i saw this print in the show was on some shoulder detail for a blouse.
i suggest you check out their show online if you haven't already seen it. they interview the sisters at the end and it's quite interesting to hear about how they were inspired by border towns.

des couleurs

before i say anything, these are not fall 2010 trends (well, with exception to one look).

i have great difficulty when it comes to buying coloured garments. i gravitate to black without fail when shopping, so what i decided to do was to browse style.com to find looks that i like that incorporate lots of colour in hopes to train my eye and one day purchase a garment that isn't black or neutral. here's a little collage i made up of my favourites that showcased the most colours.

tu me manques!

montreal was too fun. i wish i could've been there longer because i didn't manage to even get to the downtown core or old montreal! not to mention, the only thing i came home with was a half-empty bottle of blue raspberry warheads sour candy spray... i spent all my time eating, window shopping, partying, and saying i was going to buy a cool ring from OLDgOLD. but i'm not complaining - best weekend ever!

hear ye, hear ye!

alexander wang's fall 2010 collection is showing tomorrow at 7pm in new york city. for those of you who are in new york and not going to the show, your best bet is to watch the live feed in times square! wang made an agreement with american eagle to use their large LED board to stream his show. and for those of us who are not in new york, you can watch it live online! i've already watched alexander mcqueen and burberry prorsum's last shows online and it works really well and gets me really excited. so you should do it, too!

eyes wide shut

sasha pivovarova for interview magazine

i find it interesting that the drawings are really poorly done but the image came out looking amazing.

glitter

no, i'm not talking about that amazing mariah carey movie, i'm talking about mac's holographic glitter. i found this image in glossy magazine, and i'm in love. i want this glitter on my face every day.

retail therapy

i just bought this amazing trench from zara yesterday that i'm absolutely in love with. it reminds me of prada spring 2009 meets burberry spring 2010 - two collections i love. i'm really into the military trends that are ruling the runways for the next few seasons. my favourite look of the moment is wearing neutral colours and a bright flashy lipstick.
on that note, i also picked up a new lipstick from mac called cyber. it's dark, dark purple and i'm obsessed. what's great about it is it nearly looks black in some light, but it's not. so you can get a gothic look without wearing black lipstick.

ps: aritzia's having ridiculous sales right now - go!
